As I’m walking out onto the rooftop deck of Paul Oakenfold’s mecca,
the Hardrock Hotel-I begin to appreciate San Diego’s evolution towards
a fashion conscious, metropolitan macrocosm of uninhibited
individuality and upscale identity. The last Sassy City Chicks Fashion
Bash had me focused on hand-made custom-quality fitted tweed jackets
and flowy silk dresses, and while this summer’s event was reminiscent
of my last SCCFB night that left me with impressions of intricate
creativity and the restless power of hand-made clothing, I couldn’t
break free from my observation of California’s night life fashion.

As 24K gold swarovski adornments sparkled out of the corner of my
eye, a tall blond handed me a delicious sparkling glass of Dirty Blond
grapefruit champagne. San Diego fashion has come to express the beauty
of our sparkling beaches, lush vegetation and golden sunsets and has
gracefully merged our paradise into a less-is-more approach to luxury.

DJ Frankie M, saturated the evening with beats like Daft Punk’s One
More Time and Dirty Vegas’s Days Go By while I head bobbed through the
circuit of fashion. I stopped to meet Belladonna Marie, whose white
cotton jackets had ties made of silk ribbons and her heavy dresses had
necklines cut through to the navel, where turquoise material met to
embed the waist in a sleek and revealing shape. Shortly after, I made
my way to meet a sparkly black shirt with slithery silver swirls that
swankily uncovered my shoulders and reminded me how elegant a pair of
jeans can be if you invest in the right tops. While hand made gold
earrings with midnight blue teardrops by JJ have been hanging off my
earlobes and generating a fair amount of compliments, it is the see
through materials, open necklines, lace infused cuts and thin
veil-like lingerie-pieces that captured the essence of the upscale,
summer couture seeping through our Southern California fashion scene.

While powerful luxury brands like Marc Jacobs and Ella Moss have
popped up on clothing racks at these events, it was Southern
California’s own risque and revealing sense of identity that embedded
itself throughout the night. I mean, think about it. Yes, it can get
hot and muggy in So Cal, so women are wearing less clothing. But,
Californians’ uninhibited and open characteristics are a trademark of
the beach-goer’s care-free, simple life and justify the minimalism
behind our style.

Cadrys to launch a new series of must-have rugs that represents the late Florence Broadhurst’s vision. This legendary Australian designer, Florence Broadhurst, epitomized style and flair for over five decades. It is david mast design’s desire to introduce her elegant designs in a contemporary format to design professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area. As part of theagreement, david mast design will be the Northern California distributor of these elegant rugs that were inspired by the worldwide travels of Broadhurst.

“In the world of design, reinventing great design in a new way is always challenging. Not only was Florence Broadhurst an amazing designer she was a colorful character always pushing the boundaries. david mast design was chosen to partner with Cadrys Rugs of Australia to bring the Bay area the exciting collection of Florence Broadhurst designs in hand-woven rugs. As a contemporary designer I love to see these rugs in projects becausethey are colorful, exotic, and they stand the test of time.” Says David Mast (Owner of david mast design)

A native of Australia, Florence Broadhurst set out for the world as an entertainer in the realms of music and comedy. She traveled extensively throughout Asia in the early 1920’s, soaking up the culture, artistry and architecture that would one day inspire her path as an artist. Broadhurst eventually made the transition from artist to textile to wall covering designer, creating vibrant works by hand. Her goal was to cure people of what she called

“the timid decorator syndrome” and to personalize her designs for her clients. It is this same philosophy that david mast design emulates and is the reason David has aligned himself with her flamboyant work. david mast design’s never-ending quest for excellence has driven him to use Broadhurst’s worldly spirit to deliver elegant and quirky, Asian-influenced yet Western, rug designs that beg to be admired as works of art. Despite the high-end quality of these rugs, the product is durable enough to challenge any foot that dares to sashay over the natural fibers.

Florence Broadhurst designs include subdued, yet posh florals, a myriad of swirls and patterns as well as more adventurous and meaty psychedelic motifs in an array of colors that will please design conscious clients and inspire design professionals. No wooden floor will feel complete without them. The Florence Broadhurst Collection is available for viewing and purchase by appointment. Robert Cadry, the owner of Cadry’s hand-woven carpets will travel to San Francisco and be available for interviews May 5-8, 2010. From Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Onassis, and Marilyn Monroe to modern-day fashion icons like Victoria Beckham and Sarah Jessica Parker, we can’t deny that these women have influenced our sense of style.

Style icons inspire many of the designs that we wear today. When Marilyn Monroe took the famous photo with her white halter dress, everyone wanted to wear halter dresses. Even in recent years, halter dresses have made a comeback every season.

There is something about a halter dress that speaks to a woman’s inner diva and perhaps beckons her to channel Marilyn Monroe even if for just a little while.

Another icon who continues to influence fashion in modern times is the legendary actress, Audrey Hepburn. Just recently the Givenchy dress that Hepburn wore in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” topped the list for greatest female screen outfit of all time. Nowadays the little black dress is in every woman’s wardrobe and just about every fashion designer has offered us his/her take on this fashion staple.

Even today, style icons from the past continue to inspire new designers. It’s evident in the premier collection of designer duo Emilio & Coco that they’ve taken inspiration from classic fashion and infused their dresses with the aura of timeless elegance. Emilio & Coco’s collection reminds us that you don’t have to wear the latest trends to capture attention. All you need is a classic, quality-made piece that flatters the figure.

One modern style icon who doesn’t get as much attention as her billionaire husband or other celebrities is Melania Trump. She is the epitome of what it means to be ladylike, sexy, and chic. Her classic fashion sense is reminiscent of many style icons from the past. And lest we forget about Melania’s step-daughter, Ivanka Trump, who is creating her own style legacy.

There is something, though, that makes a woman a true fashion icon. What is the common thread that makes these women irresistible – so much so that they’ve inspired other women to emulate them from head to toe? The answer simply is: Confidence. A true style icon exudes grace, has etiquette, and is comfortable with who she is as a person. You can wear the most expensive couture dresses, but if you don’t have that X-factor, then you simply just get lost in the crowd.

The glorious hat designs ever so slightly offset the prominent statement of femininity and couture.

As I placed Arturo’s mesmerizing creations atop my head-one by one, they transformed my face into picturesque visions, while dreamlike auras of circus shows captivated my imagination! Arturo’s mastery is embedded within his ability to induce states of awe among those that play with his talents.

I showed up at Arturo Rios’ trunk show held at the Village Hat Shop, in Hillcrest, all I could see was a sea of women mesmerized and consumed by the task of trying on Rios’ genius hats. The spectacle reminded me of a masquerade ball of costumes and lace. Many of Rios’ hats are made from feathers from all kinds of birds. The magnificence of the purple magenta colors appearing on the rooster feathers was unreal! No pantone color pallet could dream such heavenly concoctions. While they were surely a pleasure to look at and try on, Arturo emphasized that each hat requires quite the bit of effort, “Each feather is placed individually and customized onto the pieces, the brooches sitting in the center are found in random vintage places all over the world.” The silk black veils that are slithering off the edges of the hat, to fold onto the face, are individually bought and picked from France. As I inspect a hat that looks like sunshine rays, Arturo describes the quality of the piece in vivid detail, “The delicacy of the silk is sourced from an actual 1950’s piece. See here…” Arturo points to the distinct fabric changes, “The top is lighter, while the silk is woven much tighter on the bottom, to cover the eyes in a mask-like illusion.”

Arturo’s visions are unreal. He says that they can sometimes come to him out of the blue like dreams, while other times he waits for days and gets nothing! “Generally, I look at the way birds move and communicate. I’m infatuated by their colors…by their being” he says. It is no surprise to me that birds look so stunning on and in Rios’ hats, the detail and precision of each lifelike ornament is infused with a magnificence expected in the most heavenly of creatures.

Arturo’s couture hats have been on the heads of Paris Hilton and Lady Gaga, not to mention featured and used in countless magazines and fashion spreads. The hats continue to adorn the heads of the nations most fashionable. Rios is fearless in his color usage and intends for his designs to be worn by those with a fine appreciation for couture and elegance, “There has to be a fine balance, in the use of my hats. Clothing must be chosen [accordingly].

It’s been a couple of hours since my stop at the hat shop and all I can think about is Arturo’s vivid use of colors, unbelievable projection of delicacy and the power of such an artistic accessory-the hat.
